How to be part of the digital world instead of ignoring it

It’s been almost 20 years since the first digital day of the digital world. On 6 August 1991, the World Wide Web became publicly available. But it feels like there is an absurd amount of people who are still ignoring how powerful the Internet is.

Being part of the digital world is crucial and if you ignore it, you’ll end up suffering. You’ll end up losing opportunities, money, and most essential, time. Yes, time. While most people run away from social media and the Internet because they are wasting time on it, I believe the purpose of the digital world is to help you automate tasks so you have more time for yourself.

Technology is your friend and this is the point I’m trying to make with this article. I’ll be talking about the minimum effort you have to put in to have access to the advantages the digital world provides and I’ll provide you with an action plan.

  • The minimum effort the digital world requires
  • 3 types of advantages
  • Steps needed to become part of the digital world
  • What happens if you keep ignoring the digital world?

The minimum effort the digital world requires

To be part of the digital world, there are a few things you have to do. At the same time, it’s not required to do all of the following, but the more the better:

  • Social media;
  • Website;
  • Professional-made photos;
  • Weekly content.

The last one is required and it’s part of the first two.

First, you need to be present on social media and share your thoughts on those topics that you are passionate about. The more passionate you are about something, the better. The more passions you have, the better.

Then, you need a website. The website is important because some of those who will be reading your social media posts will be interested to know more about you. With the help of the website, you can connect better with anyone who’s interested to learn more about you.

Next, and I’d recommend you to start with this, are the professional-made photos. Yes, the first impression matters and you can impact the first impression others have on you with some professional-made photos, in a studio.

In short, this is the minimum effort the digital world requires so you can become part of it and be active.

3 types of advantages

I’ve been trying my best to experience the digital world as much as possible and I must say that it’s truly amazing.

It feels fantastic to see people do what they love and make a living out of that. For example, if you go on twitch.tv, you’ll see all kinds of content creators who are paid for a specific activity.

What’s the activity? It can be anything, from playing games to singing or painting.

Who’s paying them? The community around them.

You may say it’s not that easy to stream on twitch (or do anything else on any other platform) but it is supposed to not be easy. Nothing worth having comes easy. It’s not easy to write articles every single week. It’s not easy to create online courses every single month. It’s not easy to stream every single day. It’s not. Especially when you have to do it, most probably, for the rest of your life.

1. Advantages at work

You may ask yourself how posting on social media is going to help you at work.

Can posting on social media help you have a better salary?

Yes, it can. Imagine the following situation.

You work in a sales company and you post on social media (it doesn’t really matter what platform as long as there are enough people to engage with your posts) and you share valuable ideas with your network.

You don’t have to post every day (though it would be ideal). You post 3 or 4 times a week and you do your best to share your views on the topics that you are passionate about. Since you work in a sales company, maybe you could share some insights on sales and help people improve their sales skills.

While you do this (posting 3 or 4 times a week on social media), your posts will be seen by many people, including colleagues and maybe your manager or boss.

If you post something that your boss finds valuable, for sure you’ll be seen as a valuable employee. Therefore, posting a few times a week will create an advantage over your colleagues.

And this doesn’t mean your colleagues are not smart or they can’t be valued. It simply means that you are doing something they aren’t.

2. Business opportunities and networking

Let’s say you want to start a business and you hope to make at least 10 sales a month for the first 6 months.

It would be great to have a community of people around you who are already engaging with you and sharing your ideas with others, right?

In two, five, or ten years you may want to start your own business. What if, instead of waiting for that moment to come, you stop ignoring the digital world and start doing something about it?

It costs you around 50 to 100 euros to have professional-looking photos. Then it costs another 300 to 1000 euros to have a professional-looking website. Or you can learn to do it yourself for around 100 euros (through online courses). And after that, you only have to start posting weekly.

The more information you share with others, the more people will know about you. And trust me when I say that it’s really important to be known by people in a world where the personal brand is king.

3. Money

If you are that type of person who likes to have more sources of income (who doesn’t), then being part of the digital world is crucial.

Through the help of the digital world you’ll find business partners, new jobs, and all types of opportunities.

If you go to my LinkedIn profile, you’ll see I have a short description of myself that starts like this: “I’m an optimist and in everything I do I put at least a gram of the optimism I live.

It has around 5 paragraphs and a few years ago, when I used to approach recruiters on LinkedIn for various projects or maybe jobs, most of them told me that they love the description and would like to meet me.

Just with the minimum amount of effort you can impact how others see you. And it will bring you amazing benefits.

Fun Fact: 0 % More Calculated Risks

Did you know that optimists are 15% more likely to take calculated risks?

Steps needed to become part of the digital world

For sure, you need to have a website, professionally-made photos, and social media accounts. But before that, you need to do something else.

You can have the best website out there. You can have the most professional-made photos in the world. You can write every day on social media. But all these don’t really matter if you don’t know what you want to share.

Therefore, (1) the first step, before building anything, is to decide on what you want to share with the world.

I recommend you to think about your job (both industry and domain of activity) and then think about your passions. After that, try to find a common point between them and talk about that.

(2) Right after you have that figured out, think of some topics and write a few words down on these topics. Then share them with your close friends and ask them what they think. Also, tell them what you are going to do with these texts. Next, create some social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Quora, Reddit, or whatever and share your ideas and thoughts there.

(3) Regarding the photos, the faster you’ll have them, the better. There’s no perfect time to have them. And (4) the website should be done in the first 6 months. I would say that ‘the faster, the better’ applies here too, but you don’t really need to start with the website. The website is irrelevant if there is nobody interested to find more about you.

What happens if you keep ignoring the digital world?

You’re going to become a caveman.

But not the caveman that you’re probably thinking of – but that one who’s ignoring the learning process that he has to be part of so he can understand what’s going on with the world.

The world we’re living in is a digital world and ignoring it is like buying land far away from the city, building a house in the middle of nowhere, with no neighbors, and living there for the rest of your life.

If that’s what you want, you can keep ignoring the digital world and become a caveman.

Or, you know… you can put in the effort and be part of the digital world. There’s no in-between – you’re either in or the digital world will throw you out.

With love and optimism,
David
