The present moment is the only thing you have. Now, tomorrow, or 10 years from now, the only thing that you’ll have will always be the present moment.

This is something I’ve been struggling to understand for a while but everything is happening in the present moment. Everything else is an illusion.

It is an illusion when you decide to go on a date and you start worrying about how you’re going to look, what you’ll talk about, and so on.

It is an illusion when you remember the last time you applied for a job and you failed because they told you that you were not prepared.

It is an illusion when you want to change something at yourself today but you believe you’ll have the right resources somewhere in the near future.

Everything comes down to what you do today, right now, right in this very moment. Everything else is just wasted energy. Everything else is just a desire for something that you wish you had. Everything else is just you finding excuses for not doing it in the present moment.

The present moment is defined by actions

Living in the present moment means doing something and it is different from thinking about the present moment or feeling the present moment.

If you want to eat something, cooking or ordering the food would be related to living in the present moment. Thinking about what you’re going to eat or feeling sad because you’re not going to eat something has nothing to do with the present moment.

The present moment and the actions behind it are so crucial that they are connected to everything.

If you want to lose weight, you’ll lose weight if you do right now the needed exercises to lose weight. If you don’t do it right now, at the other side of your actions is postponing your actions. There’s no middle way. You either do it or you postpone it for a future that’s not clear.

Postponing is one of the biggest illusions we know because you believe that something that can happen right now, will definitely happen in the future, which is not true at all. If you don’t do it now, how you’re going to have the certainty that you’ll do it in the future?

You won’t because there’s no certainty when it comes to the future. Because all you have is the present moment and action only happens in the present moment.

Waiting for the miracle is how you fuck the present moment

Making decisions that are not in your best interest and thinking about how others will understand your decision leads to living a life that’s connected to an impossible future.

Living your life based on what others want from you is like eating only when others are hungry. You’ll never get to enjoy food and you’ll never get to feed yourself properly. But you say to yourself that there will come a time when you’ll eat whenever you feel hungry and won’t depend on others anymore.

Bullcrap!

There’s no future version of you where you do the right thing if today you don’t do the right thing. The future version you’re hoping to become is not that far. It is actually so close to you that you can see it in the mirror. But as long as you think that what you want to become will only happen in the future, then you’ll never be able to achieve that version of yourself.

The bad side a bright future

As long as your mind is only fueled by the idea of a better future, the future you’re expecting will never come.

If you expect to be able to run a marathon this time next year and you don’t do anything about it in the present moment, there won’t be any marathon.

If you expect to be able to have that business that you want and you don’t do anything about it in the present moment, there won’t be any business.

Always saying to yourself that ‘next year will be better’, will make you only pay attention to a future that may never exist. More than that, when you do that, you’re telling yourself that whatever you want, will only come later in life. While having the things you desire sometimes requires patience, doing something about it in the present moment is crucial.

If you never do something today, you’ll never get to have something tomorrow. After all, tomorrow is nothing more than a different today.

As long as you only hope for a brighter future but you don’t do anything about it today, you’ll never get to live that brighter future. Instead, the only thing you’re doing is creating the illusion of a brighter future and that illusion will be the only real thing in your life.

With love and optimism,
David
