We are living in a world where optimism is difficult to describe (people find it hard to answer the question “what is optimism?”) and, because of that, people tend to stay away from optimism. But you are an optimist, and I’ll prove it to you if you keep on reading.

After doing in-depth research on optimism for an entire year, I can tell you that optimism is many things. Optimism is a lifestyle that is connected to many things, such as depression, helplessness, pessimism, thinking, building habits, setting and achieving goals, worrying, anxiety, and much more.

While I have properly curated some insights that you could find on the “What is optimism?” page, in this article I’ll share with you 20 ways to reframe optimism.

Growth Mindset

1. You are an optimist if you practice Growth Mindset

To practice growth mindset is to believe that you can develop abilities and intelligence through dedication, effort, and persistence. At the opposite pole of growth mindset is fixed mindset — where your talents and abilities are fixed, and you have difficulties in changing them.

If you embrace challenges, persist in the face of setbacks, believe that effort is essential (because it leads to mastery), learn from criticism and learn from others’ success, you are an optimist!

To help you improve your growth mindset, here are some of the things that you could practice:

  • Learning a new skill: Enroll in a course to learn something new (learn Japanese or learn to bake) while you focus on your progress, rather than perfection.
  • Appreciate feedback: Not only actively seek for feedback, but you use it as a tool for improvement rather than criticism.
  • Accept mistakes: Accept your mistakes and see them as part of your learning process.

Resilient

To be resilient, you have to have the capacity to quickly recover from difficulties. It means adapting well to trauma, adversity, or even stress. When you are resilient, you understand that everything is temporary and you are able to stay focused on your ability to recover and learn from your setbacks.

If you practice emotional regulation, have high self-efficacy, have a support network, and approach problems methodically and creatively, you are an optimist!

To visualize success means to imagine successful outcomes in vivid details and it can boost your confidence to the point where you have higher chances to achieve your goals.

If you visualize your future outcomes in detail, feel the emotions associated to your success, and align your goals with your vision, you are an optimist!
